When you become exhausted all you can think of is sleep. Being tired can make you grumpy, give you a headache, and more, but you know that after a good night’s sleep you will feel much better. But sleep doesn’t just rest your body and reenergize you. Sleep keeps you healthy. Adequate sleep not only makes you feel better, it is healthy for your mind, your weight, and your heart. Read on to find out more about the health benefits of sleep.
Benefits
According to research an adequate amount of sleep goes much further than boosting your mood and giving you renewed energy. Some of the benefits of sleep include:
Living longer: In 2010, a study was conducted among women between the ages of 50 and 79. Results of the study showed that among women who slept less than five hours nightly, or more than six and a half hours nightly, more deaths occurred. So an appropriate amount of sleep may help you live longer.
Lower weight: Sleep and metabolism are both controlled by the same region of your brain. When you’re tired, specific hormones in your blood increase–the same hormones that influence your appetite. Lack of sleep, therefore, makes you feel hungry. It has also been found that dieters who were sleep deprived lost more muscle mass, whereas dieters who received adequate sleep lost more fat.
Stress: Stress can keep you from sleeping, and lack of sleep can cause stress. Adequate sleep, on the other hand, reduces stress levels, blood pressure, and possibly even cholesterol levels. Proper sleep also boosts your overall feeling of well-being.
